Niels Haldrup
Head of Department Niels Haldrup

Dear colleagues,

Research evaluation at Aarhus BSS

Last year the Aarhus University Senior Management Team decided to initiate an evaluation of research quality across the different research environments at the University.

At Aarhus BSS, the purpose of the evaluation is to contribute to the continuous improvement of research quality in light of the overall BSS strategy and the strategic research priorities of the respective departments. The evaluation will take place during 2024-2025 and is expected to be repeated in the future within a 4–5-year cycle.

The two main components of the evaluation are 1) self-assessment carried out by the department, and 2) assessment of the department’s research activities by an external review panel of experts covering the various main fields of the department.

The evaluation will be organised around a set of evaluation themes. Three of these themes are common to all BSS departments: Research output, (national and international) research collaboration, and acquisition of competitive funding. In addition, the department will identify two-three department-specific themes, which are to be assessed in the context of both the self-evaluation and the assessment conducted by the external reviewers.

The evaluation process at ECON

To structure the work at our department, it has been decided that the department’s three sections will constitute three units forming the underlying basis for the evaluation.

The planning process for the evaluation is currently starting up with discussions in the department management team. The department-specific evaluation themes will be essential for the 2023 ECON White Paper, which will be presented at the yearly strategy seminar held by the faculty management team in November.

Further on, faculty members and the Departmental Forum will be involved in the evaluation process and contribute to a dialogue about research quality and cultivation of conducive research environments.

Job openings

In accordance with the department’s cycle for job openings and promotions, we will have junior and senior job openings the coming months.

Most junior position openings (postdocs and potentially also assistant professorships) will be funded by external funding.

In general, department funding of new positions is possible across all fields and levels to a limited degree, but with a focus on recruitment in fields where we foresee a need for lifting particular teaching and supervision tasks.

All positions are announced nationally and internationally via https://econjobmarket.org/

The deadlines for applications are:

  • Associate and full professor: 6 December 2023
  • Junior positions (postdocs and assistant professorships): 22 January 2024

See the postings for associate and full professor here: https://econ.au.dk/vacancies.

The official call for the junior positions will be published shortly.

I wish you all a nice weekend.
