Course Topic: The course introduces state of the art survey methods for elicitation of beliefs, preferences and expectations. It consists of three parts; (1) A motivation for eliciting preferences and beliefs through survey methods. Herein an introduction to methods for eliciting risk, time and social preferences, as well as a discussion of best practices for designing own surveys and practical advice on how to use the  measures and linking them with data from Statistics Denmark. (2) An introduction to vignettes, how to design them and how to use them for elicitations of beliefs and preferences. (3) How to elicit subjective expectations in different contexts and with different research questions, with a specific focus on identifying the identification problem, binary vs. continuous variables and how to use surveys in both developed and developing countries.

Prerequisites: No prerequisites

Course Procedure: The course consists of 5 days of classes and an optional exam.

Instructors:

  • Abi Adams-Prassl, Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford
  • Thomas Epper, Full Professor in Economics at the IÉSEG School of Management
  • Adeline Delavande, Professor of Economics at the University of Technology Sydney (Teaching via Zoom).

Exam:  A presentation and discussion of a paper based on survey data. The presentation should have a specific focus on the survey methods used and a critique hereof, based on the material covered in the course.

ECTS: Upon completing the course lectures, participants will be awarded 2.5 ECTS credits and a course attendance certificate. If the participants decide to complete the exam, they will be rewarded 5 ECTS points in total.

  1. DGPE members from AU, AAU, KU, CBS and SDU.
  2. PhD students from Economic Departments at Nordic universities outside Denmark

For other participants, the course fee is EUR 500.
