Topic: Vessel stowage planning problems and research paths, an overview

Abstract
During my PhD I have been studying stowage planning problems for the container industry. Stowage planning is the art of positioning containers on a vessel. Though this might sound simple, the amounts of constraints and special cases that are needed to be handled, makes the gap between research and industrial application huge. During my PhD I have worked hard to close this gap, and I still keep working at it now. In this presentation I will give you an overview of the work that has been done in stowage planning, and I will give you my opinion on  which research paths are suitable for further research and which are not. I will also touch upon the differences between stowage planning in the container and RORO industry, showing you the new and interesting challenges we are working on.

Short bio
Dario Pacino is an Associate Professor in transport optimization from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). His main research interests are within maritime logistics, applied research and metaheuristics. He started his carrier as a Ph.D. student at the IT-University of Copenhagen where he studied optimization methods for stowage planning. Since then, he has been hired at DTU where he started working on container terminal optimization and sustainable shipping. He is now the principal investigator of a grand solution project funded by Innovationfonden on the greening on the RoRo shipping industry.
