Two more Knights of the Order of Dannebrog at the Department of Economics and Business Economics
Two more economics professors are now honoured for their academic work and contributions to society by the Danish royal family. Niels Haldrup is upgraded to Knight 1st Class and Philipp Schröder is appointed Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.
“I am both honoured and humbled by being appointed Knight 1st Class of the Order of Dannebrog and receive what I believe is referred to as the ‘”officer’s cross”. In 1790, P. A. Heiberg wrote that ”Ordener hænger man paa Idioter” (trans. ‘orders are for idiots’). But I must say, I am quite satisfied and very happy with this recognition, and so are my parents, who are rather advanced in years,” Niels Haldrup says about receiving the order. The professor is already a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog (2010) and is now promoted to Knight 1st Class of the Order of Dannebrog.
“Let us see if COVID-19 will allow me to once again head for the capital and have an audience with Her Majesty to thank her for the decoration,” he continues.
Philipp Schröder also feels very honoured to be knighted.
“This recognition means more than can been seen on the surface. In a sense, to me personally it signifies that I have arrived in Denmark,” says the professor, who has lived in Denmark for a number of years but is originally from Germany.
In addition to his academic achievements, Philipp Schröder is involved in a number of tasks that benefit society, most recently as a member of various expert groups on the reopening of the economy and phase-out of the bailout packages following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As I see it, economics deals with questions that matter to society. I have been privileged that over the past years, I have been asked to contribute to some societal processes in Denmark. For example, serving on the Danish Competition Council or on an COVID-19 economics expert group allows one to bring economics research into play and make it count. Being acknowledged by the Queen – as a foreigner – by becoming a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog is an absolute honour for me,“ concludes Philipp Schröder.
In November, Helena Skyt Nielsen and Peter Løchte Jørgensen from the Department of Economics and Business Economics were also appointed Knights of the Order of Dannebrog. Read more in the news article 'Two economics professors to be knighted'.

Niels Haldrup has been a professor of economics at the Department of Economics and Business Economics at Aarhus University since 1999, centre director at the basic research centre CREATES from 2007-2017 and head of the department since 2018. He conducts research into econometrics and non-stationary time series analysis, seasonality, long memory and the modelling of persistence in economic time series - and is responsible for an extensive list of publications.
