Dear colleagues,

In a recent correspondence, I informed you about the possibility to request limitations regarding availability in the preparation of the teaching schedule for 2020. Unfortunately, our teaching facilities (lecture rooms, auditoriums etc.) at Campus Fuglesangs Allé are very tight. Since the Department of Economics and Business Economics (ECON) and the Department of Management (MGMT) share this limited capacity, our demands and requests are like connected vessels.

The standard rules are described in “The principles for the scheduling of teaching activities at Aarhus BSS” (see the document in Danish / English). ECON and MGMT have decided to handle special requests that are not described in this catalogue jointly in accordance with a common set of guidelines that we find reasonable in order to account for other work-related activities and to serve as a family-friendly workplace.

I am glad that we have started this collaboration across the departments, since we now have a common understanding and procedure of how to handle requested limitations.

It is our hope that moving forward, in collaboration with Aarhus BSS Studieplan, we can experiment with even more flexible schemes for teaching scheduling in the future, for instance by considering a sequential procedure where the initial planning is made in accordance with possible “hard constraints”, which are next followed by possible “soft constraints”.

The logistics of teaching scheduling is very complicated, and I thank you for your understanding in this process of solving a very difficult practical task.
