Dear colleagues,

I have now met with all scientific sections, NCRR, the PhD students, and the admin section. I thank you for the positive spirit in which we have had our dialogue meetings; I plan to continue these meetings on a regular basis.

One of the topics we discussed concerns the new economy model at Aarhus BSS, including the allocation of basic research contributions (basisforskningsmidler) across departments. The new allocation scheme is based on the 45:20:25:10 key (STÅ: man years of full time students, external funding, BFI: research output, graduated PhD students). The input for the allocation is based on a three-year moving average to ensure some smoothness in allocations over time. The input for the 2019 budget will be based on the performance of the department (relative to other Aarhus BSS departments) in the years 2015, 2016, and 2017. The relative performance of the department in this period has declined in terms of STÅ and BFI research output, whereas the share of external funding is relatively stable. Overall, this will imply a net decrease in ECON’s share of total basic research contributions in the budget for 2019. The budget model demonstrates the direct impact on the department revenues subject to the (relative) performance of the department along the four key parameters. With the new budget model, we should increase our focus on research output in top reviewed journals, and we should strive to continuously attract external research funding. Also, we should keep in mind that looking at external research funding and research output cannot be seen in isolation: Research output is strongly correlated with the level of external research funding.

The department is committed to interact with the surrounding society and to foster and extend our networks with knowledge partners and public and private corporate relations. I am glad to announce that Associate Professor Kristina Risom Jespersen has agreed to become the department’s business ambassador. Kristina will thus be at the front door when the department is approached by corporate connections, and she will collaborate with Aarhus BSS External Relations along a number of dimensions relevant for the department.
