Research and research-based education in the field of economics in Aarhus began in the autumn of 1936, when the Department of Economics at Aarhus University was founded. The main objective was to create a degree programme in business economics, but economics as such has always been an important element in the department’s now 80 years of existence. The first Master’s degree in Economics and Management (cand.oecon) was awarded in the summer of 1940.

Aarhus School of Business commenced its activities in 1939, and the Bachelor’s degree programme in Economics and Business Administration (HA) began in 1951. The first Master’s degree in Economics and Business Administration (cand.merc.) was awarded in 1969.

The economics and management departments of Aarhus BSS, now offering the research-based degree programmes MSc in Economics and Business Administration (cand.merc), MSc in Economics and Management (cand.oecon) and MSc in Business Administration (cand.soc), celebrate the 80 years of economics in Aarhus by hosting a one-day conference on the subject:

“Economics and our society in the coming years”

In light of artificial intelligence, big data etc., society will undoubtedly change in the coming years. Hence, economics will also change as experiments and huge panel data are becoming available, and the rise of bounded rationality makes it difficult to uphold the current neoclassical orthodoxy.

Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor of Finance and the Director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
